AKA Linux
With Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 already dead — and Windows 10 now past its end of support — you’re expected to upgrade to Windows 11 or be left out in the cold. The problem is that Windows 11 has such steep hardware requirements that plenty of perfectly good, fully capable PCs simply can’t run it.
That’s where a lesser-known friend of mine comes into play: Linux. Linux is a Unix-like operating system, built on the same design principles that macOS also descends from. It’s free, open source, and comes in many different “flavors.” Below are my favorites.
Ubuntu

It’s also the distro Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, runs on his own machines.

Fedora GNOME
The flagship edition. GNOME is a modern, minimal desktop built around a full-screen activities overview instead of a traditional taskbar — closer in feel to macOS or a tablet than to Windows.

💡 GNOME or KDE?
Both are free, and both run identically well on the same hardware. If you want something simple and out of your way, pick GNOME. If you want it to feel like Windows and be tweakable down to the last pixel, pick KDE. You can even install both and switch between them at the login screen.

This is the one I use. Fedora KDE hits the sweet spot for me — the newest software and hardware support that Fedora is known for, wrapped in a desktop that stays out of my way and lets me set it up exactly how I want it. If you’re comfortable poking around a bit, it’s hard to beat.
Linux Mint
Linux Mint is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly Linux distributions available. Built on Ubuntu, it takes that solid foundation and pairs it with a traditional desktop, sensible defaults, and a philosophy of just working out of the box.
If Zorin OS is the polished showpiece for Windows switchers, Mint is the dependable workhorse — less flashy, but rock-solid and extremely well supported.

Mint’s Three Desktop Editions
🌿 Cinnamon (the flagship)
Mint’s own desktop, developed in-house. Modern, attractive, and the closest thing to a classic Windows experience done properly. This is the one most people should pick.
🍃 MATE
A lighter, more traditional desktop for older machines or anyone who prefers a simpler, more classic look. Uses fewer resources than Cinnamon.
🪶 Xfce
The lightest of the three. Not as pretty, but it will run comfortably on genuinely ancient hardware — think 10- to 15-year-old laptops with 2GB of RAM.
💡 Mint or Ubuntu?
Mint is built on Ubuntu, so under the hood they’re closely related and share the same enormous software library. The difference is presentation: Ubuntu ships GNOME with its full-screen app overview, while Mint ships a familiar taskbar-and-menu desktop. For someone leaving Windows, Mint is usually the gentler landing.
